SKC has moved the Krav Maga class schedule to Mondays and Thursdays from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Come join us for some excellent self-defense training and fitness! It’s a blast!
The Annual Spring Dan test and color belt clinic (held April 12-13) in Houma, LA has come and gone, but the comradeship and lessons learned live on. Hosted by Houma Tang Soo Do, (Louisiana), nearly 100 students and instructors from all parts of Region 6 were present. SKC Students testing for black belt or advanced black belt ranks included: Kelsey Strahan (for Cho Dan), Samuel Bond (for E Dan) and Katherine Robinson (for Sam Dan). Best of the test in the Junior division was awarded to Katherine Robinson for her outstanding performance during the three-hour test. The following day, color-belt students gathered to learn a variety of Tang Soo Do skills, including work on Hyungs, weapons and self-defense. The day ended with a wonderful Louisiana-style crawfish boil! Many thanks to Master Lanny Domangue, Mr. and Mrs. Click and all the fine folks at Houma TSD for a wonderful time. Tang Soo!
SKC is now teaching a new class for younger martial artists, ages 4 to 6 years old. The new class meets from 4:30 to 5:00 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children learn basic balancing skills, stances, punches and kicks, and work on coordination, listening skills, Korean terminology and discipline in the dojang, all in a fun atmosphere that keeps them giggling and excited!
In addition, SKC is offering new Krav Maga training classes on Monday nights from 5:30 to 7:00 PM, and Thursday nights from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Krav Maga was developed by the Israeli Armed Forces as a hand-to-hand combat defense system, and has since been widely adopted by many martial arts trainers as a simple, effective method of self defense in a variety of circumstances. It is an excellent addition to our martial arts classes, combining fitness training with quick defense against unarmed and armed assault situations. Master Strahan is a certified instructor in this new program and class enrollment has already begun. Because of the physical nature of this system, it is recommended for adults ages 16 and up.

SKC will start having our regularly scheduled classes at the 1620 Hwy 53 location on Thursday, September 27. After moving the studio in June, our student enrollment increased so dramatically that we were soon out of class space. Fortunately, a larger space became available in the same shopping center, so we’ve made the move! Students should enjoy this new dojang with more amenities and much more floor space. Thanks to everyone for your continued support as Strahan’s Karate Center grows– we appreciate your business and look forward to seeing you in class on Thursday. TANG SOO!
The Region Six Fall Dan Test and Championship will be held on September 16-17, 2011 in Florence, AL at the University of North Alabama. Grandmaster Jae C. Shin will be attending! Several of our students are slated to test for 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree black belt ranks, and a number of students from both the children’s class and adult class will be competing during the all-day tournament on the 17th. In addition, there will be a Championship Party Saturday evening for all participants and guests, and commemorative event t-shirts will be available for purchase.
The official “Championship Hotel” will be the Emerald River Hotel in Sheffield, AL. Space is limited and rooms are booking up fast, so make your plans to attend now! For more information, hotel reservation phone number and Championship application forms, see Master Strahan at the studio. Hope to see everyone there!
Region 6’s Annual Black Belt camp June 3-5 in Booneville, MS was a challenging, but memorable experience for the 13 members of SKC who attended. Cho Dan Bo (Black Belt candidates) Michele Lewis, Vicki Polk and Aaron Bond enjoyed excellent instruction from the guest master instructors in the region and are looking forward to their upcoming Black Belt test in September. Black belts Brenda Askew, Samuel Bond, Jeremy Johnston, Micah Lewis, Joey Polk, Lauren Pursley, Becky Starke, Sue Starke and Adrienne Tucker trained in advanced techniques of weapons, self-defense and the art of inner “hyungs” (forms) under the instruction of special guest Master Jeff Green of Great Britain Tang Soo Do, Wales, UK. All in all, a great time was had by all. Tang SOO!
